Wildcats Maul Jackalopes

Wichita Falls rounded out the first weekend of the 2013-14 season in style Saturday, beating the Odessa Jackalopes 6-2 to complete the weekend sweep.

The Wildcats used a balanced attack to pick up the two points, with six different skaters finding the back of the net.

Wichita Falls opened the scoring in the first period after some great work by Tyler Ledford. The center picked up the puck near the right faceoff circle and tried to center for Zach Foesch. His initial pass was blocked, but Ledford threw it back out in front for an onrushing Sam Piazza to blast home for his first goal of the year.

The Wildcats doubled their lead less than a minute later on the power play. This time, it was Ben Kucera who potted the goal to make it 2-0 off a nice combination play by Nick Farmer and Piazza to work the puck out of the corner.

The middle frame saw more of the same from Wichita Falls. Farmer cashed in an early power play chance to make it 3-0, tucking his shot under the crossbar after an inch-perfect pass through the crease by Kucera.

After Chad Guderian scored for Odessa to cut the lead to 3-1, Jake Townsend restored the three-goal cushion with his first tally of the season. Jordan Jancze won an offensive-zone faceoff and Ledford pulled it back to Townsend at the point, whose laser shot snuck its way through traffic and into the top corner to make it 4-1.

The Wildcats kept their foot on the gas in the third period. Kyle Bauman rifled a shot inside the left post on the power play to make it 5-1, before Colin Staub made it 6-1 by stashing home a loose puck after Alfred Johnasson’s slapshot was blocked in front.

The Jackalopes scored their second goal late in the third, but it was merely a formality as the Wildcats took the win, 6-2.

Wichita Falls is next in action on Wednesday against the Minnesota Magicians, the first of four games in four days at the annual North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minn. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.

Game Notes:

Kyle Bauman now has seven goals in his last six games dating back to last season…
