Wildcats Defeat Bobcats in Semi-Final Rematch

Friday, 09.23.2016 / 6:40 pm CT

In a rematch of the Robertson Cup Semi-Finals against the Bismarck Bobcats, the Wildcats rolled to their first victory of the 2016 Showcase, ousting Bismarck by a final of 4-2.

For the first time in four games, the Cats scored a first period goal. Ryan Burnett collected a crisp breakout pass by Aleksi Poikola and flew past the Bobcat defense to notch his second shorthanded goal of the season 11 minutes into the game.

Steven Tillie scored his first goal as a Wildcat after Ilya Skvortsov handed him the puck in Bismarck’s left corner. Tillie ripped a screen shot past Will Ulrich and into the net to double the Wildcats’ lead at the 4:46 mark of the second period. Three and a half minutes later, C.J. Regula also scored his first Wildcats goal after he shoveled a shot through the equipment of Ulrich and into the net.

The momentum in the game shifted drastically after Domantas Cypas was given a five minute major and a game ejection for boarding behind his own net. The Bobcats went to a long power play, and converted twice in a three-minute span.

Two Bobcat veterans converged on Bismarck’s first goal. Jared Resseguie fed a cross-crease pass to Tobias Fladeby, who backhanded a shot past Evan Moyse to end the Wildcats goaltender’s shutout. Two minutes and 49 seconds later, former Wildcat Parker Mismash teed up a slap shot and blasted the puck past Moyse to cut the Wildcats’ lead to one heading into the third period.

Moyse stole the show in the final twenty minutes, turning aside 16 Bismarck shots and keeping the Wildcats in front. Then, with just over five minutes remaining, Burnett found Poikola with a feathery pass on the wing in the Bobcats zone. Poikola deked Ulrich and buried a backhand shot past the beaten goaltender to give the Cats a 4-2 lead, which they would hold until the end of the game.

Moyse backstopped the Wildcats to an impressive 37-save game, stopping all but two shots to improve to 3-2-1 on the season. Ulrich denied 26 of 30, falling to 1-2-0. The Cats will wrap up their showcase on Saturday morning against the Aston Rebels. Coverage begins at 9:15 AM from Blaine, Minnesota.
