Wildcats right winger Ricky Carballo has been named the South Division First Star of the Week, the NAHL announced Monday.
Carballo had a monstrous series against the Topeka RoadRunners, scoring the Cats’ only two goals on Thursday night, adding an assist Friday, and putting up a whopping two goal, two assist game on Saturday which included the overtime winner. In total, the Keller, TX native had four goals, three assists and a +7 rating in the three-game home stand.
The ex-Boston Jr. Ranger is proving to be a productive contributor to the Cats a third of the way into the 2016-17 season. He’s scored at nearly a point-per-game pace and is now third on the team in points, with 9 goals, 9 assists, and 18 points through 19 games. His nine goals lead the team, and they’ve not all been scored the same way.
Carballo has shown he can be utilized as both a grinder who goes to the dirty areas and scores the greasy goals, and as a playmaker capable of generating highlight-reel plays. The 19-year-old possesses tremendous high-end speed and boasts deceptively soft hands, which he used to create goals on the power play, at even strength, and even on the penalty kill against Topeka.
Coach Nelson has paid close heed to Carballo’s versatility. “Ricky’s able to produce for us in numerous ways, be it a skilled play on the rush or a net-front dirty play. He’s an all-around goal scorer and we expect him to have lots of games like this over the course of the season.”
