WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Behind a hat-trick from Max Reisinger and four power play tallies, the Wichita Falls Wildcats bowled through the Amarillo Bulls, 9-1, at the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday night.
Jake Townsend had a goal and two assists, Kevin Charyszyn potted a pair and Austin Beaulieu had a goal and an assist in the tilt. Evan Okeley and Erich Jaeger also found the back of the net, and Cam Knight and Nikita Litviak each notched two assists, while Austin Shaw made 38 saves to earn his league-leading sixth win of the season.
The Wildcats stormed out of the gates in the first period and raced out to a 3-0 lead, tallying thrice in the first six minutes of the contest.
The first marker came just 1:58 into the tilt with Wichita Falls on the power play. Matt Koch held the puck at the point and played it down to the corner for Nick Farmer to control. Farmer rifled a shot that whistled through the crease, but Charyszyn was on the back door to knock the disc down and smash it home for his sixth goal of the season.
Barely three minutes later, the ‘Cats doubled their lead on a pretty passing play. Knight worked the puck from the blue line into Litviak in the high slot. Litviak held on a shot as the Bulls goaltender over-committed, and then snuck a quick pass to Jaeger to swat it home uncontested to make it 2-0.
Moments later, the Wildcats tacked on a third. After corralling the puck at the point, newcomer Jeff Baum floated a soft wrist towards the front of the net for Okeley to tip home as he buzzed in front of Jacob Weatherly to make it 3-0. The marker was his third of the season, with the assist for Baum representing his first-career point.
Wichita Falls stretched its advantage in a frenetic second frame that saw penalties aplenty, the Bulls Head Coach Jon Rogger get ejected and Charyszyn miss a penalty shot.
The Wildcats stretched their advantage early in the stanza with their second power-play tally of the night. Townsend collected a puck in the neutral zone and sent it forward to Reisinger, who had circled back to collect the puck. The Austrian wheeled into the zone and toe-dragged at the top of the left circle, before unleashing a wicked wrister into the top shelf for his third goal of the year.
The Bulls pulled one back after Mitchell McPherson scored unassisted on a wraparound goal to make it 4-1, but Wichita Falls regained its four-goal edge in the waning moments of the second.
With the Wildcats shorthanded, Tommy Apap skated into the zone along the right-wing wall and centered for Beaulieu on the left post. Beaulieu was tied up and tumbling down to the ice, but he got just enough on the puck to deflect it home to make it 5-1 on his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
The third period saw more of the same from Wichita Falls, as four goals took the game out of reach for Amarillo.
Reisinger picked up a tally early in the frame on a nearly identical sequence to the one that led to his first goal, before Townsend blasted a slapshot home to make it 7-1 on the power play.
Charyszyn then picked up his second of the contest, slipping a wrist shot between the legs of Weatherly to make it 8-1, before Reisinger slammed home his third of the night on the power play as time winding down.
The Wildcats are next in action on Friday, Oct. 17 when they return to the Kay Yeager Coliseum to host the Odessa Jackalopes on Magnet Schedule Night. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a magnetic 2014-15 season schedule courtesy of Darrel and Carol Walker – State Farm. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m.
