The final installment of our player profiles features goaltender Austin Shaw, forward Paul Soubry and defenseman Wilson Vershay.
Shaw spent the 2013-14 season in the Rocky Mountain Roughriders organization, competing on their Midget Major squad. In 29 games played for the Roughriders, Shaw posted a 19-10 record with a 2.35 goals against average, .917 save percentage, and two shutouts.
Standing at 6’4”, Shaw’s size, movement and athleticism make him a top goaltending prospect. The Highlands Ranch, Colo.-native was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 North American Hockey League Draft, and aspires to attend an Ivy League school.
Soubry comes to Wichita Falls after spending last season with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He skated in 52 contests for Flin Flon, compiling a 6-4-10 line in the process. Prior to his time with the Bombers, the Winnipeg-native played for the Winnipeg Wild midget major squad, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 2013 after posting 28 points in 41 games.
Vershay spent the 2013-14 season with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. While there, he played in 32 contests, tallying four goals and two assists in the process. Before his time with the Jr. Sabres, the 6’3” defenseman played for the Nichols School during the 2012-13 season.
The Wildcats conclude their preseason slate on at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when the Lone Star Brahmas visit the Kay Yeager Coliseum. Tickets are available at the KYC box office, with all tickets available for $7.
Wichita Falls will kick off the regular season on Saturday, Sept. 13 when the Odessa Jackalopes skate into the KYC on Pack the House Night. All tickets for that contest are free, and are available at the KYC box office beginning Monday, Sept. 8.
