Jonny Lazarus has been named the South Division’s 1st Star of the Week, the NAHL announced Monday.
After being forced out of the lineup with a shoulder injury on February 26th, Lazarus missed four games and could only sit by and color commentate as the Wildcats dropped a hard-fought game to the Corpus Christi IceRays two Saturdays back. The next game, however, he was reinstated into the Wildcats lineup and wasted no time making his presence known.
Just 15 minutes and 24 seconds after swapping a headset for a full metal cage, the Syosset, New York native ignited the KYC crowd with a power play blast after being fed a cross-ice dish from Aleksi Poikola. Lazarus would also set up long-time teammate and line-mate Austin Albrecht with a nice pass from behind the Amarillo Bulls’ net, which would give Albrecht his 50th point as a Wildcat this season.
The following night, Lazarus found Michael Rounds with a nice cross-crease pass for another assist, and would also assist line-mate Nick Rosa on his game-winning goal early in the third period, capping off a four-point weekend. His impressive performances against Amarillo earned Lazarus back-to-back Kona Ice First Star of the game honors.
“It was great to see Jonny have a breakout weekend after being injured for three straight weeks,” Wildcats Head Coach John LaFontaine said. “He was a difference-maker for us on the weekend and he picked up right where left off. He used great vision to set up his teammates and was rewarded with three assists.”
Lazarus’ multi-point weekend propelled him to the 40-point club. He became just the fourth Wildcat this season to rack up 40 points, joining Albrecht, Austin Beaulieu, and Adam Goodsir.
