Wildcats goaltender Jared Dempsey has been named the South Division First Star of the Week, the NAHL announced Monday.
Dempsey played every minute of last weekend’s series in Corpus Christi, and made a whopping 66/68 saves. Over the course of the two-game road series, Dempsey flaunted a 1.00 goals against average and a .970 save percentage. Not to mention, he pitched his first shutout of the 2016-2017 season on Sunday night, denying all 32 shots he faced.
The 6’3”, 190 pound goaltender from suburban Detroit has been as steady as they come since arriving in Wichita Falls a month ago. He has not been charged with a loss yet since becoming a Wildcat, and sports an impressive 9-1-0 overall record this season complemented by a respectable 2.15 GAA and a .929 SV%.
Dempsey has proven himself as a composed netminder who is strong on his angles and reflexes. He uses his size to make saves which many keepers could not make. As of right now, his save percentage is only 0.4% lower than what Justin Kapelmaster’s was through his first ten games last season (.933).
Wildcats Head Coach Josh Nelson believes beyond a doubt that Dempsey’s recent performances have helped the rest of the team play as well as they have. “Since we picked up Jared a few weeks ago, he’s stepped in and played rock-solid for us,” said Nelson. “He’s allowed our team to play with confidence.”
Since Coach Nelson has taken over command of the team, the Wildcats have earned a South Division First Star of the Week three of a possible four times. Aleksi Poikola, Ricky Carballo, and Dempsey have all won the award within the last four weeks.
Dempsey and the Wildcats will head out to west Texas this Thursday to visit Ector County Coliseum for the first time this season, where they will take on the Odessa Jackalopes. The Cats and Jacks will kick off a three-game series in Odessa from Thursday to Saturday, with each game scheduled for 7 pm CT. On Sunday, the Wildcats will host Skate with Santa at Kay Yeager Coliseum from 12-2 pm. Call the Wildcats Office at (940) 716-5587 for tickets or questions.
