The first day of the Wildcats' camp is over and a few players have stood out quite well in the first three games. The most significant notes were a combined shutout by three goalies for the White Team and a two-goal effort from the Green Team's Russell Armbruster.
In the opening game of camp, Green took it to Red by a 4-2 score. Red scored the game's opening goal, as Tyler Bruneteau tapped home a feed from Marvin Powell, but after that it was all Green. Mitchell Bailey's shot found its way through a partial screen by Armbruster to tie things up before Armbruster picked up his two goals in the second half for a 3-1 lead. Defenseman Blake Olinyk added a goal as well. Powell got a goal to go with his assist late in the game.
In the middle game, the White Team's goalies were the story, blanking the Black Team 2-0. The entire second half of the game went scoreless, with Lauri Ramo and David Heflin of the white team and Joshua Hickey and Mark Manolescu combining to hold everyone scoreless in the final 30 minutes. Matt Leon also contributed to the White Team's shutout as their starting netminder.
The nightcap was all Blue Team after an early Orange Team lead, winning by a 6-2 score. Orange picked up early goals from Trent Johnson and David Fassbender, but the Blue Team quickly woke up and exploded for 6 goals in the next 45 minutes. This game was the first to show any significant degree of chippiness with a scrum breaking out midway through the second half, then a dust-up between 6'5" Jason Eddy and 5'7" Taylor Dremluk.
The camp continues tomorrow at 10:50 am.
