Alumni Alert: Costello, Sexton Turn Heads

Although the Wildcats season has been over for some time, there are still players with ties to Wichita Falls in action across multiple competitions, highlighted by Chad Costello and Dan Sexton.

After a remarkable regular season that saw him help the Allen Americans (ECHL) claim the Central Division regular-season crown, Costello has continued his hot play during the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The forward registered two assists in the Americans’ series-clinching, 4-2 win over the Rapid City Rush on Tuesday, giving him nine points in the series. Allen will next face the Ontario Reign in the Western Conference Final, beginning Sunday, May 17.

Costello, who recorded 63 points on 29 goals and 34 assists for the Wildcats in 2004-05, now has 15 points on four goals and 11 assists in 11 postseason games this spring. He finished the regular season as the league’s leading scorer, compiling 125 points (41 goals, 84 assists) in 72 games to claim the ECHL scoring title and earn an All-ECHL First Team selection. Costello also received the 2014-15 ECHL Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to the player who is judged to have exhibited the best sportsmanship combined with a high standard of playing ability.

Elsewhere, Sexton has garnered attention while representing the United States at the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in the Czech Republic. Playing mostly on the right wing, the forward has a goal and an assist in six games played, as Team USA secured top spot in Group B. The United States will next face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Thursday, May 14, with puck drop scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time. Coverage is available on NBCSN and on the network’s streaming platform, NBCSN Live Extra.

A central piece of the Wildcats’ 2005-06 roster, Sexton notched 22 goals and 37 assists for 59 points in his lone campaign in Wichita Falls. After spending two seasons at Bowling Green State University, Sexton had shuttled between various leagues in recent years, before settling with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL. In 49 games for the Russian side this season, he recorded 19 goals and 28 points for 47 points to lead his team in goals, assists and points.
