Wildcats Alternate Captain Aleksi Poikola has been named the South Division First Star of the Week, the NAHL announced Monday.
Poikola notched an assist and scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday night, and opened the scoring for the Cats on the power play Saturday.
The Finnish Sensation has probably been the Wildcats’ most stable and dependable player since the start of the 2016-17 season. He currently leads the team in points with a whopping 19 through 16 games (6 goals, 13 assists, +5 rating) and has taken on a more critical role in his sophomore season in Wichita Falls.
Since the start of the campaign, Poikola has been the Wildcats’ go-to center on the power play, the penalty kill, and at even strength. He’s become an even more complete player than he was last year, as he has begun playing a more physical style and has logged more taxing and crucial minutes.
His improved completeness in his second season in the NAHL has caught the attention of Wildcats Coach Josh Nelson, who has been impressed by the Finn’s growth. “Aleksi’s play is always consistent. He’s always doing the right things and it’s nice for him to get recognized for it. He’s becoming a big-time college-eligible player with his consistency.”
